Replacing a shower arm isn't a job you'll need to do often, but it is quite simple. While you are at it, you may want to consider installing a multifunction shower head, since you will have already done most of the work to install one. This is a great upgrade because it allows you to manually adjust the different types of water flow.
- Locking pliers
- Teflon tape
Removal
Remove the old shower head using the locking pliers. If you are reinstalling your old shower head instead of putting on a new one, don't ruin the shower head's threads while you are unscrewing it.
Remove the shower arm with the locking pliers.
Apply Teflon tape around the threads of your new shower arm, and thread the longer half of the arm into the fitting that had held the old arm.
Reinstall your shower head.
Test your shower to ensure that there are no leaks.
Tips and Warnings
- Use Teflon tape whenever you thread steel onto steel or steel onto PVC.
