One of the easiest and quickest ways to give your bathroom a makeover is by painting it. New paint not only brings new life to a bathroom but it also makes an otherwise boring bathroom into an exciting and interesting space. However, when painting your bathroom there are a few things that you need to keep in mind.
Tape
Before you start painting your bathroom, to tape off all the edges and items that you don't want to get paint on. Painting can be messy and hard to clean up so use painter's tape to protect the edges of mirrors, counters, fixtures, tile and anything else you don't want to splash with the new color. Painters tape can also be used to hold up plastic coverings on your floor, fixtures and counters. Taping off the items that you don't want painted gives you the peace of mind to go ahead and paint right up to the edges of those items.
Coats
The number of coats of paint that you use depends on the color of paint your are painting over. If you are starting with light-colored, white or un-painted walls and are painting with a darker color paint, fewer coats will be required. However, if you are painting over a dark-colored wall, then you typically will have to apply more than just a couple of coats of paint.
Colors
The color you choose to paint your bathroom is going to be the most important factor in how good your bathroom looks once you're done painting it. Choose a color that you and your family will not only enjoy but will also give your bathroom the look you want. Some classic bathroom colors are light colors like white, light-blue or a light-lavender color. However, earth-toned colors such as browns, blues, greens and purples will also give your bathroom a unique touch. If you like to decorate your home based on the seasons, then gold, brown or yellow are great for fall. Blue, yellow and white are great summer or spring colors for a bathroom and darker browns, purples and blues are great for winter.
Paint Protection
Your bathroom is a damp environment. It is constantly taking on steam from the shower, or other liquids that you might be using to clean counters, walls, fixtures and so on. It is highly recommended that when you buy your paint, regardless of the color, that you also make sure to get something with mold or mildew resistance. Some brands of kitchen or bath paint already have these additives. If you are buying a brand that doesn't have these additives, you can usually have the paint or hardware store to add them when they are mixing the color.
