There are many bathroom lighting design ideas from which you can choose. When you are attempting to light a bathroom vanity, you are trying not only to provide light, but do it in a way that gives you the best functional use for seeing yourself in a vanity mirror.

Positioning

How you position the lighting for a bathroom vanity is key to its functionality. You need the light around the mirror to light your face evenly without casting shadows across it. Positioning the lights on either side of the mirror or above it, make sure the light fixture is 80 inches up from the floor, but not higher.

Wattage

The amount of light emanated from the vanity lighting is important as well. You are not trying to create low mood lighting, but don't use too much lighting or it can wash out the details of your face in the mirror. A wattage of 150 for the entire lighting fixture strikes a nice balance.

Length

For the best lighting effect, you want the light to be spread over the vanity so that the light is evenly distributed and not spotlighted on one particular area. If you have a light that spotlights your face, it wouldn't give you an accurate view of your entire face. Having a fixture that is 24 inches long or a little longer works well.
