How to Refinish a Ceramic Tile Floor

Ceramic tiles are a popular choice of flooring for bathrooms, kitchens and laundry room. Refinishing ceramic tiles will protect the floor, make it look new and extend the life of the tiles. An unfinished ceramic tile floor stains easily, and may appear dingy. Refinish your ceramic tile floor to refresh the look of the entire room.

  • Ceramic tile cleaner
  • Bucket
  • Mop
  • Sandpaper
  • Acetone
  • Paper towels
  • White vinegar
  • Ceramic primer
  • Paintbrush
  • Refinishing paint
Sweep the tile floor. Clean the floor with a mop and generic household cleaner made for tile floors. Soak paper towels in vinegar and lay them on the grout for an hour to remove mildew and grime. Rinse the grout. Allow the floor to completely dry.

Remove paint droppings from ceramic tile with 100-grit sandpaper. Pick up any grease stains with acetone. Clean up the sandpaper and acetone residue with a damp towel.

Apply primer made for ceramic tile to the floor with a paintbrush. Paint on an even layer of primer and allow it to dry for 24 hours.

Mix the refinishing paint. Pour it into a paint tray and paint the floor. Work from the back of the room to the front. Allow the layer to completely dry and add another coat.

Wait 24 hours before using the room. Clean off any paint splashes with paint thinner.

Tips and Warnings

  • Re-grout any mildewy grout that will not come up when cleaned before refinishing ceramic tile.
