Choose Your Tiles

There are many different types of tiles available made from various materials in every size, shape, color and texture, including ceramic tile and glass tile. It's important to consider the function of the room. Some tiles function better in high-humidity rooms like bathrooms or laundry rooms than others. There are some tiles that should not be used in areas with high humidity.

Buy Enough Tiles

Make sure you buy enough tiles to cover the wall and account for the ones that may get broken during the process. Sometimes you may even have broken tiles in the box that you just purchased. According to DoItYourself.com, experts say you can expect at least 3 percent of the tiles you purchase will be broken when you open the box. They may still come in handy as corner pieces once cut.

Prep the Work Area

Start by patching up any holes in the wall. Clean the entire area and make sure there is no dust or debris left behind that will keep the tiles from sticking to the surface. Use the tape measure, level and pencil to mark off the horizontal and vertical lines of the tiles. This will give you a clear point of reference. Mark these points even better by sticking pins into the wall. That way you will see the marks even once the grout is applied.

Apply Tile

Apply the adhesive in small, 3-foot sections to make sure it doesn't dry too fast. Press each tile into the adhesive. Twist it a little as you press it into the wall to make sure it stays. Repeat with the remaining tiles. You will need a tile cutter for certain areas of your wall. The tile cutter will make sure you get the cleanest lines.

Apply Grout

Mix the grout by following the instructions on the package. Start by working in small sections about 3 feet at a time. Apply the grout between the spaces of the tiles. Fill the bucket with water and use a large sponge or rags to wipe away excess grout and any that end up on the tiles. Give the grout at least 12 hours to dry. If you have installed a tile wall in your bathroom where water might splash, give it 24 hours to dry.
