Painting tiles will avoid the cost and expense of remodeling or replacing the tiles. If you decide to paint your bathroom tiles, it can be done in three easy steps. The first step, preparing the tile, is the most important to ensuring that the priming and painting of the tiles goes smoothly.

Preparation

The first thing you will need to do is prepare the tiles to be painted. The tiles and grout will need to be cleaned thoroughly. You can use a non-abrasive sponge and a mild, household cleanser. If mildew or mold is present on the tiles or grout, you will need to use a bleach-based cleanser. If the tiles that you are going to paint are in a shower or tub and you have hard water, you will need to use a calcium-deposit remover. Once the tiles are clean, you will need to lightly sand the tiles. This ensures proper adhesion of the primer. Use 220-grit sandpaper. Use a lint-free cloth or rag to wipe any remaining dust off of the tile.

Priming

Apply an all-purpose primer, such as Kilz, to the tiles. Allow the product to dry to the manufacturer's specifications. Once the primer is dry, lightly sand the surface again. Apply a second coat of primer to the tiles for the best paint adhesion.

Painting

You can paint the tiles using an oil-based gloss paint and natural-bristle brush. It is best to use two thin coats of paint as opposed to one thicker coat. This allows for proper curing of the paint and better durability. If you wish to paint the grout line a different color, use a small artist's brush.
